Abstract
Describes a number of methods of widening existing earthworks using soil reinforcing, soil nailing and other forms of soil improvement: it also indicates other aspects which need to be considered. It is issued for the guidance of engineers responsible for the design of the geotechnical and associated aspects of widening highway earthworks, particularly motorway widening schemes. It describes some of the factors which may influence slope stability and gives information on some of the methods available.

Publisher History
The Highways Agency transformed into Highways England in 2015 and was then renamed as National Highways in 2021. The government company had responsibility for operating England's motorways and major A roads, including modernising and maintaining the highways. Their publications include the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges, the Manual of Contract Documents for Road Works and Interim Advice Notes.
