Architects' Journal Working Details
Discusses the Crystal Palace Park Café a two-storey café and community space designed to integrate seamlessly within the Grade II-listed park. Positioned to mediate between different landscape levels, it features a ground-floor café with a terrace and a first-floor community room offering 270° views of the park and lake. Clad in half-round cedar shingles, the design references the nearby Grade I-listed dinosaur sculptures, blending naturally into the surrounding greenery. Despite a limited budget, the project employed cost-effective, self-finished materials like cedar shingles and galvanized steel, ensuring durability, affordability, and minimal processing, while also improving accessibility between the park’s central axis and the lakeside path.
First produced in 1895, the Architects' Journal features comprehensive building studies, and in-depth technical articles.
