Abstract
Relates to the challenges of designing complex connections between structural steel elements that fall outside the standard design guidance provided in BS EN 1993-1-8 and the SCI "Green Books." It highlights the need for first-principles design approaches in such cases, aligning with the general rules of BS EN 1993-1-1. Based on collaborative efforts between Steelwork Contractors and project structural designers, the guide aims to establish industry best practices to improve connection design, ensuring strength, stiffness, and consistency in tender information quality. By promoting realistic connection modelling and comprehensive documentation, the guide seeks to enhance project reliability, cost-effectiveness, and overall outcomes, acknowledging that connections can contribute significantly—up to 40%—to the cost of a structural frame.
