Abstract
Sustainable development requires careful consideration of not only buildings and infrastructure, but also products, components, services and processes. The main objectives of sustainable development are to pro-actively and innovatively improve the built environment and the construction sector, to minimise adverse impacts on the environment, society and economic growth and to resolve stakeholder conflicts of interest in planning and decision processes. This document defines, discusses and provides guidance on applying the general principles of sustainability (economic, environmental and social) to building and construction work from a whole life cycle perspective.
