Abstract
Using a value-driven approach, Beyond BIM offers practical advice and recommendations regarding information model design and implementation, intelligent components and surrounding system architectures to aid in delivering more intelligent built environments. Drawing from over 40 collaborative research projects over the past 25 years, the book provides examples where intelligent systems have been successfully demonstrated and takes the reader on a journey from smart building level on through to fully-integrated smart city design. Through this approach, Beyond BIM provides a roadmap for evolving urban knowledge management – from project-based knowledge creation to whole life-cycle data management. The target audience for this publication includes architects and architectural technicians, designers, engineers, facilities managers, local authorities, specifiers and academics.

BRE is a building science centre that generates new knowledge through research. This is used to create products, tools and standards that drive positive change across the built environment. BRE helps its government and private sector clients meet the significant environmental, social and economic challenges they face in delivering homes, buildings and communities. BRE is owned by the BRE Trust, a registered charity. The Trust uses the profits made by the BRE companies to fund research and education that advances knowledge of the built environment.
