Abstract

Explores how existing tower blocks can be a viable, sustainable part of a city’s future, as well as its past through carrying out environmentally friendly, sustainable retrofit and refurbishment. Provides five principles for planning a successful tower block retrofit: start with existing stock and intended outcomes; value wider benefits e.g. improved health and security; ensure joint working is effective; set realistic timescales; and value resident engagement. Also considers further opportunities to make the most of tower block retrofit focusing on smart meters and district heating.
