Architects' Journal Building Study
Abstract
Looks at the environment and education centre in Rainham, East Anglia, commissioned by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). Full public access and an emphasis on education where fundamental to the Rainham project, with one of the requirements of the client brief being education space. Security and energy-efficiency were also high on the agenda. Steps taken to prevent vandalism included the site being dug out to form a protective moat and all external openings being protected by heavy sliding shutters. This is a deliberately tough building with an industrial feel, designed to withstand the elements, but equally using a heavy superstructure as part of a menu for a very high standard of environmental performance. Architect: van Heyningen and Haward Architects.
