Abstract
New European Standards require the preservative treatment of timber to be specified in terms of results of the treatment process rather than the process itself. To check compliance with this specification, suitable methods of analysis must be available. This paper reports a study of methods for quantifying retention of copper/chromium/arsenic (CCA) and creosote in treated timber. It concludes that currently recommended methods are not wholly adequate and can cause significant uncertainties for specifier and treater. Unequivocal methods for sampling and analysis need to be found. In addition, a commonly accepted, practical method for determining timber density is required since, to express retention, analytical results have to be converted to kg/m³.
